Description

Clear shellac is soluble, free of resin and wax, a natural primer widely used in various applications by artists, carpenters, decorators, and gilders.. Gilders use shellac over gesso—a mixture of rabbit skin glue and whiting—to prevent the gilding size from mixing in. They also apply shellac directly to the metal leaf after it has been applied, using various techniques to protect it from potential oxidation. Shellac serves as a classic sealer for artists seeking a professional finish in their artwork.

  • Perfect sealer for protecting artwork.
  • brush, cotton yarn, or microfiber-cloth can be used to apply shellac.
  • It is non-toxic as is.
  • Shellac is only usable indoors.

Combine 1 part by weight of shellac with 4 to 5 parts by weight of alcohol.

Combine the ingredients in a container with a tightly fitting lid. Soak the shellac flakes in about half of the alcohol to be used for 24 hours or longer. Stir occasionally, and when dissolved, add the balance of the alcohol. After fully dissolved shellac, it should be strained through a fine mesh cloth to remove impurities. Store in a cool and dark place.

We also stock a selection of shellac finishes, including Orange shellacLemon shellac, Blond shellac, Clear Shellac, and Ruby shellac.
