A Guide to Using Metallic Gold Paint on Any Surface

Metallic gold paint transforms walls with a touch of luxury and inviting warmth. Its shimmering surface catches the light, instantly turning an ordinary room into a vibrant, elegant retreat.
Why choose DecorGold metallic paint?
- Creates visual depth: Metallic paints contain sparkling mica flakes that dance with the light, shifting in colour as the day unfolds. This ever-changing effect brings walls to life, unlike the stillness of flat or matte finishes.
- Adds elegance and warmth: Gold paint infuses living rooms, entryways, or bedrooms with a sense of richness and welcome. Feature Walls and Murals: A splash of gold as an accent or feature wall instantly captures attention, creating a stunning focal point that enlivens the space without overpowering it.
- Cost-effective luxury: Metallic paint offers the glamour of gold at a fraction of the price, providing a flexible alternative to costly metal panels or metallic wallpaper.

Metallic Gold Paint for Outdoor Use
A quality Old Gold paint should not contain bronze powder, since bronze (copper) can oxidise when used outdoors. DecorGold paint uses a mix of coated metal powder and mica pigment, which are tiny colored glass particles, instead of bronze powder. DecorGold’s mica is made in Germany and is top quality. DecorGold works well outdoors and comes in several colours. The colour-rich gold shade is closest to gold leaf, while pale gold is a good choice if you prefer a more subtle finish.
Metallic Gold Paint for Metal
Begin by applying a primer coat. DecorGold contains anti-rust agents and helps preserve metal, so you don’t need a topcoat. Make sure there are no sharp edges, as oxidation often starts there. You can also apply DecorGold directly to metal surfaces.
Metallic Gold Paint for Wood
Seal the surface with an undercoat or lacquer before applying the old gold paint. For indoor applications, a primer is usually enough.
Gold Paint on Plaster
Plaster absorbs paint effectively, making it an ideal surface for old gold paint. The metal pigment remains on the surface, creating a subtle shimmer. Typically, one coat provides a good finish. For best results, use Kölner brushes, as their soft filaments ensure a smooth application.
Metallic Gold Paint on Plastic
Apply a bonding primer to the plastic surface. Once dry, paint over it with the old gold colour.
Metallic Gold Paint on Polystyrene
Exercise caution when working with polystyrene, also known as Tempex or Styrofoam. Only use water-based gold paint on these surfaces. You can apply DecorGold directly without primer. Two coats typically provide the best finish.
Gold Paint on Walls
Ensure the wall is smooth before applying a matte paint. Use light ochre as a base for gold, brown for bronze, or oxide red for copper. For silver, which is more challenging, use a medium grey base. Metallic paints behave differently from standard paints due to their pigments. For optimal results, use DecorGold, available in seven colours.
When painting walls, long horizontal strokes are common, but with metallic paint, these strokes may become visible. To minimise this, use a roller and apply the paint in a criss-cross pattern. This technique may result in a slightly uneven appearance, which is normal. Achieving a perfectly even finish with metallic paint typically requires professional spray application.
