Gold Leaf Flakes for Resin Jewelry And Nail Art

Gold Flakes for Resin Art

You can use three main techniques to add gold leaf to epoxy resin projects, depending on the effect you want. Use tweezers or a soft brush to handle the gold flakes, since they can easily stick to your fingers and tear.

Method 1: mixing gold leaf directly into resin for a 3D effect

This method works especially well for filling jewellery moulds or creating coasters with a layered, 3D look.

  1. Mix your resin: follow the instructions for your two-part clear epoxy resin. Let it sit briefly so air bubbles can rise to the surface.
  2. Add the gold flakes: With tweezers, gently drop small pieces of gold leaf into the cup of wet resin.
  3. Stir gently: Mix slowly so the flakes spread evenly, but try not to create extra bubbles. If you add too many flakes, the resin may lose its clear, glassy look.
  4. Pour and pop bubbles: Pour the resin mixture into your silicone mould. Use a toothpick or quickly wave a heat gun over the surface to pop any bubbles you see.

Method 2: pressing into the silicone mould first (surface coating)

This way, the gold flakes will end up right on the very outer surface of your finished piece.

  1. Place flakes in the dry mould: before adding any resin, use tweezers or a silicone tool to gently press dry gold flakes onto the bottom or sides of your silicone mould.
  2. Pour clear resin: slowly pour your mixed clear resin over the flakes. The resin will hold them in place.
  3. Demold: after the resin has fully cured, remove your piece from the mould. The gold leaf will be right on the outer layer of the resin.

How to Apply Gold Leaf Flakes to Nail Art

To use gold leaf flakes in nail art, apply them over gel or regular nail polish. For best results, seal them with a good top coat to prevent peeling or tarnishing.

Method A: Using Gel Nail Polish (Recommended)

  1. Apply your gel base coat and the gel colour you like. Cure your nails under a UV or LED lamp as usual.
  2. Keep the sticky layer: after curing your colour gel, leave the sticky layer on the nail. This will help the gold leaf stick. If your gel polish does not leave a sticky layer, add a thin coat of base gel or foil gel and cure it for 10 seconds to make the surface tacky.
  3. Add the gold leaf: use tweezers, a silicone tool, or a wax picker to pick up small pieces of gold leaf. Gently press them onto the sticky part of your nail.
  4. Flatten: press the flakes flat: Use a silicone tool or a gloved finger to gently press the gold leaf flat so it lies level on your nail with no raised edges.
  5. Cure: apply a generous layer of gel top coat over the entire nail, ensuring you completely cap the free edge to lock the gold leaf in. Cure completely under the lamp.

Method B: Using Regular Nail Polish

  1. Apply your colour: paint your nails with regular nail polish and wait until it is about 80% dry.
  2. Test for tackiness: the polish should be dry enough that it does not smudge or slide when you touch it, but still sticky enough for the flake to stick.
  3. Apply the leaf: gently place small gold flakes onto the tacky nail using tweezers or a dry brush. Press it down very lightly.
  4. Top coat: wait a minute for the polish to set further, then seal the design with a clear top coat. Use a floating motion with the brush so you don’t drag or tear the gold flakes.
